Plan Your Camper Trip!

The REAL Pink Lantern Vibes I live by!

I know we are in the dead of winter, but this is usually the best time to plan your camper trips for the summer season! I usually get ahead of the tourist rush by being resourceful. I will not share all my hot spots, but there is no shortage if you boondock in Alaska! Below are recommendations for every glamper and glamster out there. Also, don’t forget to add Salmonfest to your bucket list! Lastly, Pink Lantern’s Glamper Merch!!! Happy Glamping.

Preparation

  1. Plan Routes and Fuel Stops: Alaska’s remote areas have long stretches without gas stations. Keep your tank topped off and carry extra fuel if possible.

  2. Check Road Conditions: Roads like the Dalton Highway can be rough. Use the Alaska Department of Transportation website for updates.

  3. Weather Readiness: Pack layers for fluctuating weather and be prepared for rain. Especially for places such as Valdez, AK.

Essential Gear

  1. Bug Protection: Mosquitoes can be intense. Bring repellents, head nets, and citronella candles.

  2. Tire Repair Kit: Gravel roads can cause flats, so carry a repair kit and spare tire. My camper has special all terrain tires for stops such as McCarthy!

  3. Power Supply: A generator or solar panels are useful for boondocking (off-grid camping).

Camping Tips

  1. RV Parks and Boondocking: Alaska has many RV parks, but boondocking is common. Respect “No Camping” signs and follow Leave No Trace principles.

  2. Bear Safety: Store food securely in bear-proof containers, and never leave trash or food scraps outside. Bears can still get into a camper…

  3. Dump Stations: Plan your stops for emptying waste tanks. Many state parks and towns have dump stations.

Activities and Wildlife

  1. Fishing and Hiking: Bring gear for fishing and explore trails, but carry bear spray. I like to use the AllTrails app.

  2. Wildlife Watching: Keep binoculars handy and maintain a safe distance from animals like moose and bears.

Seasonal Considerations

  1. Travel Window: May to September is ideal for RV camping. Many roads and parks are inaccessible in winter. If you chose to winter camp, ensure your camper is designed for four seasons due to pipes bursting etc. Due to road conditions, I would recommend a pick up camper.

  2. Midnight Sun: In summer, pack blackout shades for your RV to block out the near-constant daylight. The door window light blocker was a life saver! Lastly, some twinkle lights for vibes!

Enjoy the stunning scenery that Alaska has to offer!
